What are the validity requirements for wills?

The testator must draw up the will themselves. They may not instruct anyone else to do so or leave the decision as to who is to be the beneficiary. The will must be drawn up, dated and signed by hand, Article 505 ZGB. To be sure of having drawn up an effective will, a public will can also be drawn up before a notary and with the assistance of two witnesses, Article 499-504 ZGB.
